Pirates, smugglers and castaways |
This is always a popular subject, which perfectly complements The Reading Voyage and young people's journeys into the wonderful world of books. Find out about pirates through the ages - what did they really do? Make up your own pirate articles (captain's rules for the ship); see if your museum has wreckers' lamps, old brandy casks, guns and pistols - or doubloons and pieces of eight.

Websites
There is a useful site called 'Pirates, Fact and Legend' which gives lots of interesting historical information, including biographies of famous pirates, life at sea - and how many pieces of eight you'd get in compensation for a lost arm or leg!
The Pirates' Hold is a fascinating and pretty wide collection of information and examples of maps, documents, books, films, biographies, pirate flags and a piracy timeline.
